Dec. 9 food drive to support NSCC students in need

An NSCC fundraising and food drive effort is turning into a marathon community event to be broadcast live from the NSCC Ivany Campus. The “Feed Our Future Food Drive Telethon,” organized by NSCC media students based at Ivany, is collecting donations for fellow students in need.

The telethon is a four-hour live show, open to the public, on the Ivany Campus between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on December 9. A live stream will be available on Facebook and on campus radio. There will be singing and storytelling by JUNO Award-winning local musician and visual artist Meaghan Smith (“It snowed”), more live music by NSCC music students, a variety of kids games, an ugly sweater contest, and a visit from Santa. Smith’s new children’s book will also be available for sale.

Organizers are hoping for money, non-perishable food, and gift card donations to support the campus pantry and bursaries which help students with living expenses.

“Last year, I was a student who accessed gift cards. I was waiting on student funding that wasn’t coming in,” said telethon executive producer and student Theodore Misseri. This experience became a major motivation to raise awareness that there are many students in our community who need help.

Food and gift cards can be brought to the event or dropped off during the event at the NSCC truck by the Baker Drive Sobeys. “We’re hoping for a food mountain,” said Misseri, adding that any size donation is welcome.

Beside the fundraising effort for fellow students, this event is also a showcase for the skills of the media students. “This event shows what we do, why [our programme] is important”, said Misseri, pointing out that it was the students who grew the NSCC fundraising efforts into this community show, and who are in control of the broadcast during this live event.
